Acetyl octapeptide-3
An eight-residue peptide developed for topical cosmetic research, and an extension of the better-known acetyl hexapeptide sequence by two residues. It is studied for its interaction with the SNARE complex — the protein machinery that governs vesicle fusion.
The sequence is modelled on the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, one of the three proteins in the SNARE complex. Research interest is in whether a competing fragment interferes with SNARE assembly in in-vitro models. It is a topical cosmetic research peptide, not an injectable, and the literature on it is cosmetic-science literature rather than clinical.

Both termini are blocked: acetylated at the N-terminus, amidated at the C-terminus. That is not decoration. An unblocked peptide of this sequence has a free amine and a free acid, a different charge state and a different mass, and it is not the same compound — the acetyl group alone is 42 daltons. If a certificate for material sold as Snap-8 reports a mass near 1033 rather than 1075, the acetyl group is missing.
It also contains a methionine, which is the residue most prone to oxidation in storage. A +16 dalton satellite peak on a mass spectrum is the methionine sulfoxide, not a contaminant from somewhere else, and it is the reason this one is worth keeping cold and dark rather than merely cool.
Supplied lyophilised. Store the sealed vial at −20°C, protected from light — see the note on methionine above. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic or sterile water run down the vial wall, never onto the powder; swirl, do not shake. Keep reconstituted material refrigerated and used promptly.
